The Month Of May

Wednesday 1 June 2016

May has been a GREAT month... I've finished exams, we've had pretty good weather & I've been super productive! May marked the start of summer for me. I was determined to get a job, work hard and get lots done. I have even had loads of time for walks (which are way more fun when it's sunny).

The greenhouse has been coming on really well this month thanks to the heat and lots of watering! My strawberry plants are flowering and starting to fruit and there is enough lettuce for all the summer salads! (Possibly maybe a little too much lettuce haha.) I have planted some new herbs, and my courgette and cucumber plants are coming on great.
The tomato plants are a bit slow, but I'm sure they will get there soon too.

This month I've been reading a little as part of my 101 things in 1001 days. I started with 'Am I Normal Yet?' by Holly Bourne which is an amazing Young Adult book about a teenage girl recovering from OCD and Anxiety and what her views on being 'Normal' are in related to her recovery. It is gripping and yet heartbreaking on so many levels.

If that wasn't a tough enough read I managed to tackle 'Asking For It' by Louise O'Neill. I say tackle because at so many stages I had to put the book down and say 'I think that's enough of that for now'. It was an incredibly difficult read, because of the subject matter, rape, rape culture and victim blaming. It's disgusting that what happens in the book is the reality for so many girls in Ireland, and how so many of the rapists get away with their heinous crimes, because they are 'lovely boys who just got carried away'.

I also got to visit Newgrange and Knowth too, which was so much fun. The tours are really well done. In Newgrange, they give you the full experience of what it's like on the Winter's Solstice, where the tomb's passage lights up and illuminates the end chamber, as the sun comes in line with the light box above the doorway. Both tombs are so impressively built.

In Newgrange you are taken inside, while in Knowth you are taken on top of the tomb to view the Boyne Valley and the surrounding landscape.

You are NOT allowed to take photos inside Newgrange, but they do allow you to take photos of the Knowth Passageway (above).

Let me know what you got up to in May! It's been a great month and a GREAT start to summer. I even got myself a part time job and I couldn't be happier.
